Soedjatmoko (1922-1989) was an Indonesian intellectual who continuously engaged with the big issues of his day, faced by his country and the world, throughout his life. There are more than 300 writings and speeches which he presented in various forums and journals—national and international—between 1948 and the year of his death, 1989. Some of these writings have been published as selected works by publishers in Indonesia, Japan and the USA. In Indonesia, many of the papers written in the English language has been translated into Indonesian.

The ‘Reading Soedjatmoko’ website is designed to provide open access to Soedjatmoko’s writings in their original form as kept in his home in Jakarta. This is a first step taken by his children to commemorate the 100 years since his birth, which falls on 10 January 2022. The website is expected to further develop as a space to build knowledge based on the life and thinking of Soedjatmoko.

The writings in this website reflect Soedjatmoko’s vast intellectual explorations and engagements. In the midst of all this, Soedjatmoko once stated that he would like to be remembered as an independent thinker.
